During a recent passage through Ottawa, I briefly heard gossip about local band The Balconies and the small following they had acquired over their short history. And pow! today I hear about the trio’s plans to release an album this upcoming September 12th.

At first glance, the band seems to sound typical, if not nothing out of the ordinary. But song structure soon made me realise there is much more to this band. The brother/sister/boyfriend…

The sophomore release, Family, from Baltimore’s Le Loup will drop on September 22nd via the fine folks at Hardly Art. I think the album cover will battle Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion for the “Eye Fuck” of 2009 award. Please, MAKE IT STOP!

Family was recorded in a remote cabin and a Maryland basement. The record finds the middle ground between what the label press release defines “tribal rock, freak folk, and sonic experimentation”.

Owen’s fifth full-length, New Leaves, will be released via Polyvinyl on Sept. 22 (pre-orders will ship on Sept. 14). The new album is a new beginning for Mike Kinsella/Owen. The recording process took place over the course of two years by multiple engineers including Tim Iseler (Wilco), Brian Deck (Iron and Wine), Graeme Gibson (Califone), and Nate Kinsella.

The label has mentioned that they’ve already sold through over half of the limited edition mixed color…

Sub Pop will re-issue Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach, on November 3, 2009. The expanded reissue will be available on CD/double-LP and will include a never-before-released live performance, special packaging and the first run of the double-LP will be on 180g white vinyl (the first run of the original LP was also on white vinyl).
